Skills Based Training for our Labasa Recipients
Published: 30th Nov 2024
Bula everyone,
As part of a new way forward under our Bayly Trust Strategic Plan (2024-2029), 16 of our Labasa welfare recipients attended a 2-day training workshop conducted by FRIEND Fiji earlier this month. The main topics covered were Organic Farm Management and Food Processing with value adding. They learnt about soil health, composting, cover cropping, food processing and fruit drying. The participants were given time to work together in groups, before preparing and presenting what they have learnt. They demonstrated on food processing eg cassava flour, fruit preservation, making oil etc. The training was indeed an eye-opener, teaching them how to make use of resources that are available in their nearby surroundings and not wasting money on buying items.
All the ladies felt empowered and were looking forward to putting into practice what they learned. The training will enable them to be self-sufficient and no doubt some will be requesting for equipment in setting their own small business or back yard gardening, to improve their livelihoods.
The training fits perfecting with the Bayly Trust’s aim of graduating our welfare recipients out of poverty and on to a better life, motivating them to be self-reliant. Come 2025 more, similar training, will be organized for other recipients. The recipients, who were presented with certificates of completion, acknowledged our efforts to bring the training to them, before sitting down to a nice lunch together.
In turn, and on behalf of the JP Bayly Trust, I acknowledge and sincerely thank our partner, FRIEND Fiji, for the great support in producing this wonderful training programme. This partnership with fellow NGOs to help alleviate poverty in Fiji is an exciting new development which we trust will gain much momentum.
Vinaka vakalevu.
