My Journey to Becoming a Nurse

The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire.

My name is Jashmita Jotika Lal, and I am a proud graduate of the University of Fiji, holding a Bachelor of Nursing with Honors. Growing up in a humble family, I always dreamed of becoming a nurse-not just to have a career, but to serve my community and give my family a better life. Nursing was my passion and calling, but my journey to achieve this dream was far from easy.

During my studies, I faced challenges that at times felt insurmountable. Despite attending all my classes, dedicating myself fully to practical training, and spending countless late nights studying, obstacles emerged that made me question whether I would ever reach my goal. There were moments of deep anxiety and doubt when I wondered if all my hard work might be lost. I remember nights spent revising under the dim light of my room, pushing through exhaustion and worry, driven only by the hope that one day, my perseverance would pay off.

Refusing to give up, I transferred my studies to the University of Fiji to continue my program. Starting over in a new institution was daunting—I had to adjust to a new environment, make new friends, and adapt to different academic expectations. But I embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow. I dedicated myself fully to my studies and was rewarded with A and A+ grades, proving that resilience and hard work could overcome even the toughest obstacles.

Despite my academic success, I encountered one of the most significant challenges of my life: financial hardship. My family was able to fund only a portion of my studies, leaving me to cover tuition, accommodation, and living expenses amounting to over ten thousand dollars for the remainder of my education. I recall countless sleepless nights spent contemplating how I could possibly continue my studies and realize my dream. The prospect of being unable to complete my nursing degree weighed heavily on me, filling me with uncertainty and concern.

It was at this critical moment that the JP Bayly Trust, under the leadership of General Manager Joshika Lata, stepped in. Their support changed my life. With their generous assistance, I could continue my studies without the constant worry of financial strain.

The Trust’s help was more than just funding—it was a lifeline, a source of hope, and a message that someone believed in me and my potential. For the first time in months, I felt a sense of relief and confidence, knowing I could focus fully on my studies and future.

Thanks to the JP Bayly Trust, I completed my final year with distinction and graduated with Honors. This achievement represents not only my perseverance but also the transformative impact of compassionate support. Their assistance allowed me to fully embrace my education, develop my skills, and prepare to serve my community with confidence and dedication.

I am profoundly grateful to General Manager Joshika Lata and the entire team at the JP Bayly Trust. Their generosity has not only changed my life but empowered me to pursue my calling with purpose and passion. The Trust’s support transformed a period of uncertainty and hardship into a story of hope, achievement, and possibility.

Looking back, I realize that success is not just about personal achievement—it is about the opportunity to impact others positively.

With the support of the JP Bayly Trust, I have realized my dream of becoming a nurse and gained the confidence to contribute meaningfully to my community. My journey has taught me that resilience, determination, and compassionate support can turn obstacles into opportunities, and dreams into reality
